          Lauriston Apprentice Program

A brief description of the farm:  We are located 7.5 km from the town of Smithers in the Bulkley Valley.  We are a Certified Naturally Grown farm and produce vegetables, cattle and turkeys on 160 acres of land on the lower slopes of Hudson Bay Mountain.  We sell locally at the Smithers Farmers Markets and from our on-farm shop.  We are a family of two adults, along with our 8 dogs, cattle and turkeys.

We are looking for people who want to learn how to farm organically and sustainably.  No farming experience is required but familiarity with farming would be helpful.
Work schedule:  Apprentices will be involved in all phases of our family farm.  You will be expected to share in the farm work 5 days per week in addition to assisting at the farmers market on Saturday mornings.  Your duties will include:

          Tillage and soil preparation
          Seeding and transplanting
          Weed control
          Irrigation management
          Harvesting
          Preparation of vegetables for market

          Animal husbandry:
          Assistance at calving time
          Cattle feeding
Caring for turkeys from poults to processing
          Pasture rotation and management
          Fencing

          General:
Housing and Meals:  A room is available in our small log house and in addition there is accommodation in a camper and room in our loft.  Meals are shared with the family.
Recreation:   Life at Lauriston Farm is not all work.  Time will be available to apprentices to enjoy the outdoors in mountain pursuits in the evenings and weekends.  Activities include mountain biking, hiking and kayaking.  During winter months there is cross country skiing, downhill skiing and snowshoeing.  There are several outdoor clubs available in the region and membership is minimal.
